Extra-Poetic Artifacts -- Jeremy's Question

Do the artifacts and photographs add to or detract, or simply distract from the the poetry?

  1. I think it adds to the feel of where the poetry might have come from. I think it's purpose is to transport you to a time, place, or feeling. Or maybe even tell a different story within a story.

  2. I love this idea of "telling a different story within a story." What are some of the specific ways Kaia Sand's work does that, or the specific moments of story-within-story for you? (this question is for anyone, not just Yudith)

I also think that the idea of "transport" -- of poetic work as vehicle or propulsion -- is really apt for this book. How does this book define or redefine what writing can be or do?

  3. Because I am a visual artist, things that are aesthetically pleasing are more apt to capture my attention, while the text is what holds it. In the case of Sand's Remember to Wave, the photographic imagery definitely adds character and layers to the story. The issue that arise for me, is that the bulk of the text was of no interest and the writing style failed at pulling me into the story. The less structural, more free form text, at the end of the publication, was quite beautifully crafted nonetheless. The consistency if highly contrasted, solely black and white images is what made it work. Long story short, I would only recommend this publication because of it's visually appealing structure, then it's text contribution would trail somewhere behind.... not the other way around.
